Living in the Shadows - Pennsylvania Medical Cannabis Epilepsy Patient
As I walked into the dispensary for the first time, I was excited and nervous. I had been self-medicating for about a three years prior to the dispensary opening.
Even though I had a medical card issued by Pennsylvania and was in an approved Pennsylvania dispensary, I still felt like I was doing something wrong.
In reality, all I was doing was picking up my medical cannabis (medicine) for my seizures. I have Epilepsy and have been battling Epilepsy for four (4) years. I am now 36 years old.
I have lived hiding for so long in the shadows of the black market, that it was strange from me to talk openly about medical cannabis and the treatment benefits.
As I was sitting in the waiting room to go back and meet with the dispensary staff, I started talking to some of the other people that were also in the waiting room.
For the most part it was men and women over the age of 50 and the look on some of their faces was so sad and full of despair. I felt that medical cannabis was their last hope for relief.
After a little bit, I got called back for my consultation, the Pharmacist was very nice and accommodating. She went over a few of the products that she recommended for me and answered a couple of questions that I had.
Once my consultation was over, she took me to the showroom where they keep all of the medical cannabis and CBD products. For me, it was so surreal.
All of sudden, it hit me that I do not have to hide anymore in the shadows. I do not have to suffer from the side effects from pharmaceutical prescriptions for my Epilepsy.
The ride home was the most calming that I can remember having in a very long time. I am sure this journey is going to be a bumpy one as the medical marijuana program is very new to Pennsylvania, but I am ready for the journey. I am fierce.
